Denotation and Connotation

DENOTATIONS

An advert for a non profit charity organisation is displays a young, black African boy looking mildly sad next to some text which reads "Dig toilets Not graves".

CONNOTATIONS

The charity may be involved with water due to the company's name being "WaterAid". The effort that the charity is trying to make may be to stop the spread of certain diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea, which thrive in faecal conditions. The text is quite powerful as it shows clearly that if the toilets are not built and action is not taken, then people will die, hence "Dig toilets, Not graves".

DENOTATIONS

A ketchup bottle ironically sliced into little ketchup slices on top of each other with a tomato head stem at its peak is displayed along with some text underneath the bottle which reads "No one grows ketchup like Heinz".

CONNOTATIONS

The company produces ketchup bottles as a product. The company also thinks very highly of themselves hence the text "No one grows ketchup like Heinz" implying that their way of producing this particular product is different to other companies but better.
